Help catch conmen who stole the life savings of two London pensioners

This is Local London reports:

THIEVES posing as Dyno Rod engineers tricked their way into an elderly couple’s house and stole £27,000.

The two men called at the house of Arthur and Peggy Perry in Craven Gardens, Barkingside [East London] at around 11.55am {on October 10].

They told the couple there had been problems with the water supply in the area and that they needed to perform checks on their home.

One of the men said he had to go to the flat upstairs and put some blue dye in the water to make it safe to drink.

He told Mr and Mrs Perry to stand in their kitchen and watch the water until it turned blue.

While the couple were doing that, the other man ransacked their bedroom, taking a shoebox where 89-year-old Mr Perry had put the couple’s life savings.

Mr Perry became suspicious when the two men told him they also needed to have a look around the couple’s front room.

When he confronted them about what they were doing, the bogus engineers ran off in the direction of Baron Gardens.

Mr Perry says he kept the money at home because he was too scared to use a bank after his account had been targeted by crooks two years ago.

He added : “I was dumbfounded when I found the money had gone.

“I worked for 48 years as a milkman and this is money I’ve saved over that time. It's heartbreaking.”

Wife Peggy, 86, added: “Arthur is still getting over a cancer operation from earlier this year.

“We really don’t need this shock.”

The couple say they will have to borrow money from their nephew to do their weekly shop on Thursday.

Peggy explained: “We have never had to borrow money before and I don’t want to do it, but we will have to for the moment.”

“We haven’t slept all night wondering what we are going to do.

“We just feel lucky that they didn’t hurt us.”

Police are appealing for information on the two men involved in the crime.

Do you know the conmen?

The first is described as about 30 years of age, 5'8, with a thin build. He was wearing a baseball cap, and a light blue T-shirt with matching trousers.

The second man is also around 30 years of age, and about 5'8, but has a tubbier build than his accomplice.
