Appeal for information after violent mugging at Cambridgeshire station

The British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses an 18-year-old man was assaulted, leaving him with a fractured jaw, and robbed of his mobile phone close to March station, Cambridgeshire, shortly after 10.30pm on Tuesday 27 September 2011.

Detective Constable Dave Rabbitt, investigating officer, said: “The victim was leaving the station and heading in the direction of Robin Goodfellows Lane, when he was approached by a group of five men.

“One of the group demanded that the victim hand over his mobile phone, which he was listening to music on. Before he could react, he was hit in the head and body several times.”

Fearing for his safety, and in a bid to escape the violent assault, the victim handed over the phone to the group. The group then made off in the direction of Station road.

During the incident the victim lost two teeth. He was required to attend hospital where two metal plates were inserted into his broken jaw.

Officers are now following several lines of enquiry into the incident, including viewing CCTV in and around the area in a bid to identify those responsible.

DC Rabbitt added: “This was an extremely brutal attack which left a young victim requiring surgery. I am now appealing for any members of the public who were in the area, who saw anything, or have any information to come forward.”

All five members of the group were wearing hoodies and spoke with foreign accents. One of the men was on a bike.

Anyone who believes they can assist police should call British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident reference B9/LNA of 03/10/2011, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
