British Transport Police (BTP) detectives have released CCTV images after a woman was seriously sexually assaulted at a tram stop in south London around 1am on Thursday, 13 October.
The victim was travelling to Phipps Bridge by tram when a man sat next to her and began asking her questions before saying he liked the way she looked.
Distracted by the man talking to her, the victim missed her stop and left the tram two stops later at Mitcham.
The man continued to pester the woman with questions before being sexually suggestive towards her. He then invited her to a friend’s house nearby but she refused.
Suddenly the victim noticed that the man had unzipped his trousers and exposed himself. He then grabbed the victim and sexually assaulted her.
The victim was able to push the man away following a short struggle and ran towards two girls who were walking nearby before later reporting the incident to police.
Pictures of the man can be seen below:
Detective Inspector Paul Langley, of BTP’s Public Protection Unit, said: “While serious assaults like this are rare on the tram network, this was clearly a very frightening and upsetting ordeal for the victim.
“We’re treating this incident very seriously and will do everything in our power to identify and arrest the person responsible. We need to identify this man before he has the chance to try and do this again.
“It’s vitally important that we get a name for the man pictured in the CCTV images as we want to question him in connection with this incident. We’ve circulated his images on police databases but to no avail so far. If you recognise him and think you can tell us who he is, we want to hear from you.”
