Councils need to create food maps

With food prices rising, councils should keep their residents fully informed of their choices when shopping by creating a Google Map showing the various shops in the area.

One type of pin could be used for independent retailers with a basic stock (newsagents), another for supermarkets, a third for cheap food shops (99p, Netto) and a fourth for large independent shops.

Price ranges and reviews could also be posted. It would be handy for people new to the area.

Councils should do this?

Why not local newspapers? Surely gathering market data is one of journalism's core tasks.

There have been some very interesting newspaper projects about gathering and mapping local price data, including the Shropshire Star's experiment with crowdsourcing local petrol prices.

The same could be done for food prices.
